All kids need shoes. All kids need clothes. And when you're strolling down the aisles of your favorite kids' clothing store, don't you wish durable medical equipment were just as affordable?! It's all about supply and demand.
While every kid does need shoes and clothing, not every child has a need for walkers, wheelchairs, AFOs, hearing aids, sensory equipment, communicative devices, etc.
Many insurance companies only cover items such as walkers when many children need gait trainers instead. Some insurance companies cover AFOs but only once a year when many children need new AFOs every six to nine months.
While we are in the "baby" stages of kidsDMExchange.org, we hope to have online petitions available for insurance companies that specifically address the lack of coverage for these "extras." Until then, please continue to write letters and file petitions with your insurance companies for more coverage for our kiddos.
And until then, please do not hesitate to contact us with your story. Your contact information will be kept completely private and will not be shared. However, if you share your story, we ask that we can share it here. That's how we can help more families of children with special needs.
